In '80 or '81, I started out on a story for Sports Illustrated called "The Fans." We've all seen Crazy fans. Fans started to become more popular after "Monday Night Football." It changed the way people acted at games. You had all these freaks coming out to be on TV.
During that time I went to the Orange Bowl game in Miami. In that crowd was a guy who was about three times my size with this oversized hat. Early in your career, it's very hard to stop a person to shoot them - especially if they are a freak. You don't want to single him out. I kept walking by this guy, but I couldn't get comfortable. After three quarters into the game, I know I have to take the picture. I snapped one or two and left.
